It was the last Group Class of Taipei Tango Festival 2009. We have just learnt an exercise where the man does a lapiz & enrosque, while leading the woman to do front ochos with embellishment. After trying the movement out for several songs, the maestros asked us to gather around. A question was raised on how the pivot of the enrosque is initiated, and the maestro gave an interesting answer:

"We have come to this festival many times and have taught many classes. Through these experiences we have come up with an observation. Many years ago, it is a rare opportunity for people in Asia to learn from Argentinian maestros. During the festival, they watched with their eyes wide open at their teacher's demonstration, as if wanting to drill deep into their bodies from head to toe and feel for themselves how each and every movement is done. They are amazed and enthusiastic about the new steps they have learnt, and after the class they will practise the steps with the excitement of a little child playing with a new toy given to him. Now, the attitude is different. Students attend classes thinking the maetros will tell them everything. There is no urgency, no desire. All they want is the video of the demo at the end of the class as their souvenior. Then, they also start analyzing, thinking, complicating things, asking meaningless questions. No! Just look and STEAL."

No!

We are indeed living in a lucky tango generation.  We register for Argentine maestro's classes as if they are surplus goods. We attend their classes to play, have fun, pass time, or just out of curiosity to check out how these maestros teach. If we unfortunately missed one class, no worries, there are plenty of teachers coming in the next few months. The thirst to learn and suck out everything we can from the maestros is diminishing with the availability of classes and youtube. Like all things, one needs to have the passion and desire to learn and the perserverance and patience to practise in order to improve in tango. The milongueros and milongueras back in the days have no teachers. They go to the milonga to observe night after night, and most have probably been through long periods of not receiving a single invitation during the milonga. The experienced will observe the green, and not until they are good enough that they will accept them as part of their group and be considered a milonguero. True, the tango society outside of Buenos Aires is a completely different story, but it is always an awakening to be reminded that it is in such harsh reality that true milongueros and milongueras were born.
